The Bookcase Book Club will meet on Tuesday, March 9 at 1:00 and 7:00 p.m. to discuss Muriel Barbery's novel The Elegance of the Hedgehog. Renee Michel is the dumpy, nondescript, 54-year-old concierge of a small and exclusive Paris apartment building. Paloma Josse also lives in the building. Acutely intelligent, introspective and philosophical, this 12-year-old views the world as absurd and records her observations about it in her journal. These two characters provide the double narrative of The Elegance of the Hedgehog, and you will fall in love with both. Tender and satirical in its overall tone, yet most absorbing because of its reflections on the nature of beauty and art, the meaning of life and death, the intelligent Muriel Barbery has served readers well by giving us the gently satirical, exceptionally winning and inevitably bittersweet Elegance of the Hedgehog. The Bookcase Book Club is led by Addie Ingebrand. Start: 7:00 pm

The Bookcase is pleased to welcome author Erin Hart to our store on Monday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. Ms. Hart will be here to read from, discuss, and sign copies of her new book False Mermaid. American pathologist Nora Gavin fled to Ireland three years ago, hoping that distance from home would bring her peace. Though she threw herself into the study of bog bodies and the mysteries of their circumstances, she was ultimately led back to the one mystery she was unable to solve: the murder of her sister, Triona. Nora can't move forward until she goes back -- back to her home, to the scene of the crime, to the source of her nightmares and her deepest regrets. Determined to put her sister's case to rest and anxious about her eleven-year-old niece, Elizabeth, Nora returns to St. Paul, Minnesota, to find that her brother-in-law, Peter Hallett, is about to remarry and has plans to leave the country with his new bride. Nora has long suspected Hallett in Triona's murder, though there has never been any proof of his involvement, and now she believes that his new wife and Elizabeth may both be in danger. Time is short, and as Nora begins reinvestigating her sister's death, missed clues and ever-more disturbing details come to light. What is the significance of the "false mermaid" seeds found on Triona's body? Why was her behavior so erratic in the days before her murder? Is there a link between Triona's death and that of another young woman? Nora's search for answers takes her from the banks of the Mississippi to the cliffs of Ireland, where the eerie story of a fisherman's wife who vanished more than a century ago offers up uncanny parallels. As painful secrets come to light, Nora is drawn deeper into a past that still threatens to engulf her and must determine how much she is prepared to sacrifice to put one tragedy to rest ... and to make sure that history doesn't repeat itself. Erin Hart is a Minnesota theatre critic and former administrator at the Minnesota State Arts Board. Her debut novel, Haunted Ground, was nominated for the Agatha and Anthony awards and won the Friends of American Writers Award in 2004. Lake of Sorrows, the second in the series, was shortlisted for a Minnesota Book Award.

The Mystery Book Club will meet at 7:00 on Thursday, March 25 to discuss Christopher Fowler's Full Dark House. A bomb rips through present-day London, tragically ending the crime-fighting partnership of Arthur Bryant and John May begun more than a half-century ago during another infamous bombing: the Blitz of World War II. Desperately searching for clues to the saboteur's identity, May finds the notes his old friend kept of their very first case and a past that may have returned ... with murderous vengeance. It was an investigation that began with the grisly murder of a pretty young dancer. In a city shaken by war, a faceless killer stalked London's theater row, creating his own sinister drama. And it would take Bryant's unorthodox techniques and May's dogged police work to catch a fiend whose ability to escape detection seemed almost supernatural -- a murderer who decades later may have returned to kill one of them ... and won't stop until he kills the other.

The Bookcase is pleased to welcome Wendy Webb to our store on Tuesday, April 6 at 7:00 p.m. Ms. Webb will be here to read from, discuss, and sign copies of her book The Tale of Halcyon Crane. A young woman travels alone to a remote island to uncover a past she never knew was hers in this thrilling modern ghost story When a mysterious letter lands in Hallie James's mailbox, her life is upended. Hallie was raised by her loving father, having been told her mother died in a fire decades earlier. But it turns out that her mother, Madlyn, was alive until very recently. Why would Hallie's father have taken her away from Madlyn? What really happened to her family thirty years ago? In search of answers, Hallie travels to the place where her mother lived, a remote island in the middle of the Great Lakes. The stiff islanders fix her first with icy stares and then unabashed amazement as they recognize why she looks so familiar, and Hallie quickly realizes her family's dark secrets are enmeshed in the history of this strange place. But not everyone greets her with such a chilly reception-a coffee-shop owner and the family's lawyer both warm to Hallie, and the possibility of romance blooms. And then there's the grand Victorian house bequeathed to her-maybe it's the eerie atmosphere or maybe it's the prim, elderly maid who used to work for her mother, but Hallie just can't shake the feeling that strange things are starting to happen . . . In The Tale of Halcyon Crane, Wendy Webb has created a haunting story full of delicious thrills, vibrant characters, and family secrets. Wendy Webb is editor in chief of Duluth-Superior magazine. A journalist with two decades of experience, she lives in Minnesota. This is her first novel.
